— IPL treatment —

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses flashes of broad spectrum light to precisely target pigment in the hair follicles plus any pigmentation that may be present on the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the hair follicles (ideally in their active growing phase) which are then destroyed as a result. It usually takes a series of treatments to notice considerable hair reduction.

The IPL machine we use at Restoration Clinic can treat hairs of any colour, unlike a lot of machines that can only treat dark hair on light skin

IPL for Pigmented Lesions

The treated lesion may initially look raised and/or darker with a reddened perimeter. It will gradually become darker over the next 24-48 hours.

The lesion may scab/crust and will start flaking off in 4-6 days, on chest and neck it could take 8- 14 days and it is important not to interfere with it while it is healing.

The lesion is usually healed within 3 weeks and will continue to fade over the next 4-6 weeks. The more pigmentation on the skin and the deeper it is, the longer it will take to heal.

Certain parts of the body may take longer to heal, such as the forehead, hands, neck, chest and the arm due to the quality of the skin and the amount of sun exposure.

Most pigmented lesions will require more than one treatment.

IPL For Vascular Lesions

Vessels treated with IPL may undergo immediate greying or blanching, or even a slight red or purple colour and sometimes the treated area can blister softly or swell for a short time.

The vessels should fully or partially fade instantly and resolve further over the following 4-6 days. If there is any scabbing it is important not to interfere with this.

Though it is unlikely, some bruising may occur and will normally clear up in 1-7 days.

Many vessels treated with IPL or laser will need a repeat treatment, and as they often form as a result of sun exposure it is likely that new vessels will form over time, so maintenance treatments are often required.

What to expect after IPL treatment

  • Mild Swelling and redness are common after any energy based treatment but generally settles quickly. Any discomfort can be treated with cooling towels.

  • There is a slight possibility of developing a crust or blister.  This is superficial, rarely results in any scarring and can be treated like sunburn or any other blister.  If any lesion concerns you contact Restoration Clinic as any requirement for an antibiotic cream will require a doctor’s prescription.

  • Brown spots and freckles could crust as a result of the treatment. It is important not to interfere with any flaking or crusting.  Moisturiser can minimise the inconvenience from this side effect.

  • There is a slight possibility that some clients may experience hyperpigmentation (darker) or hypopigmentation (lighter) on the treated areas. These are generally temporary and will fade within 1-6 months.

  • Skincare Use – As this is a medical treatment, you must use products that are Laser/IPL friendly.  Restoration Clinic has several choices of skincare and makeup available that are compatible with energy based treatments and damaged skin.

Care of an IPL treated area

  • If the area becomes dry or itchy, you should apply moisturiser to the treated area once or twice a day for 2-4 days. If itching persists, apply an over the counter 1% Hydrocortisone cream.

  • Use SPF 15 +sun cream. Re-apply every 2-4 hours. Wear protective clothing and cover up treated area. Avoiding any sun exposure helps to prevent the development of new pigmented lesions.

  • Bathe and shower as usual. Treated areas may be temperature sensitive so don’t have the water too hot. Pat the area dry after showering, but do not pick or rub the treated areas.

  • Simple analgaesics may be taken if you have any discomfort.

  • Apply a cool compress to relieve swelling or warm sensations for 1-2 hours after treatment.

  • For the first week at least gently cleanse skin with a mild cream cleanser and avoid Hot tubs and Jacuzzis, swimming pools with chlorine, Activities that cause excessive perspiration. perfumes, cosmetics and skincare containing fragrance and colours, Exfoliants, AHA’s or Vitamin A products, scrub brushes or loofah sponges until the treated area has returned to its pre treated condition (between 8-12 days).

How can IPL help to rejuvenate my skin?

Since Intense Pulsed Light targets pigment in multiple dermal layers, it can help even out skin tone and reduce pigment related conditions such as dark spots (hyperpigmentation) and vascular issues like rosacea and broken capillaries. The treatment may feel similar to a ‘laser hair removal’ session although the settings used will be customised for use in the treatment area.

  • In most cases there are no visible effects; therefore treatment does not interfere with normal activities. The patient is required to shave and exfoliate the area a day or two before the treatment.

Slight redness may occur immediately after the treatment

For best results, the face should be treated every 4 weeks, and the body every 3 – 6 weeks.

Normally a minimum of 6 treatments are required. It is impossible to predict with certainty the amount of treatments that any particular patient will require, as at all times some of the hair follicles are dormant.

  • for fair hair it is important not to shave prior to the treatment as your skin will be waxed immediately before the IPL treatment is done.

After treatment the skin could swell and redden for a short time due to absorption of heat. Cooling after treatment can help this.

Once the blood vessel is closed the blood is unable to flow through it any longer. The vein walls eventually become reabsorbed by the body, generally becoming ultimately undetectable. Blood flow from the destroyed vein is normally redirected and picked up by healthier nearby veins.

Some vessels will have vanished by the time the bandages are removed.

A few vessels will need a second treatment, and a few will not be accessible for injection at any given treatment session.

Depending on its size, a single
blood vessel may have to be injected more than once, but in any one treatment session a number of vessels may be injected.

The solutions used vary somewhat with the size of the vessel to be injected, and your doctor will be able to decide which veins are to have which solution.

Larger varicose veins often underlie spider veins. In such cases it is thought that it is best to treat these vessels first.

The type of treatment necessary is determined by the vascular ultrasound examination which gives a precise diagnosis of any major superficial vein abnormalities. If the varicose and reticular veins are treated first, often the spider veins that were connected to these will disappear over the following weeks without themselves being injected.

Because of this it may be advisable to space out the visits to allow maximal resolution of veins following each treatment, thereby minimising the number of treatments required.

After several treatments, most patients can expect a significant improvement in treated vessels. However, the recovery process is gradual and perfection is seldom achieved.
