We live in a much different world than our mothers and grandmothers. Cosmetic enhancement is not just socially acceptable nowadays, but is considered a status symbol. There’s no doubt that social media such as Instagram and Facebook have turned the tide on how we view ourselves and drives our desire to look more attractive, alluring and ageless.

The lip is one area of the face that seems to be getting more attention than any other. That’s because gorgeous yet natural looking lips can enhance your overall appearance and transform any “Plane Jane” into a stunning beauty. The secret is out and women (and some men) all over the country are flocking to their cosmetic clinic in search of the perfect lip. If you’re thinking about having your lips enhanced for the first time, below are five things your need to know:

Be Realistic about Your Desired Lip Shape – Lip Injections Are Customisable

If you plan to show the injector a picture of Kylie Jenner or even a friend whose lips you covet, you probably won’t end up with an exact replica of their lips. That’s because even the most experienced and talented injectors can only work with your existing lip shape and size. So if you want to turn your non-existent top lip into round one in one visit, it may not be possible and you’ll be advised as such.

If you still want to show that photo, go ahead, but be prepared that most clinicians will only use it as a guide. You’ll be encouraged to enhance your lips in a way that flatters your face while maintaining a natural appearance. The good news is that your lip injections can be customised to give your mouth more fullness, projection and definition. In the end the goal is to look like the best version of you.

Come Prepared and Know the Facts about Your Lip Injections

Now that you have more realistic expectations about your dream lips, you have some decisions to make. What exactly are you trying to achieve with your lip enhancement? If you’re a younger patient, you may be more interested in volume and fullness. If you’re a little older, perhaps filling in lines and wrinkles is more important to you. It also helps to understand the differences between lip filler types as some are better suited for creating that “vavoom” voluptuous look while others excel at providing hydration and rejuvenation.

Natural Looking Lips is all About Good Technique

When it comes to dermal filler, the skill of the injector will be the ultimate determining factor of your satisfaction level. For this reason it’s crucial to choose someone who will listen to your concerns and, more importantly, he or she has enough training and expertise to create a flawless and natural result.

Let’s face it, there are countless places to get lip enhancement done and not all of them may be staffed with master lip injectors. That’s why doing your due diligence in advance (sifting through reviews and before/after photos) can make the difference between an amazing outcome and a disappointing one.

Lip Filler Injections are Only Temporary

You finally got your lips done and you love them! They’re everything you’ve ever wanted in terms of lip shape, size and fullness. Your new lips were a little pricey, but they’re so worth it, because you look and feel amazing. Now be prepared for maintenance treatments once a year and possibly even more.

The truth is that even the most advanced and longest-acting fillers only last between 6-12 months. The intrinsic nature of dermal filler technology, coupled with continuous movement of your lips, causes the molecule bonds in the filler to break down a little faster than in other areas of the face.

Swelling and Bruising Are a Real Possibility

If you’re scheduled to have your consultation and lip injections on the same day then make sure to avoid foods and substances that can thin the blood and increase bruising and swelling. Refrain from taking certain medications (ask the clinic in advance), supplements like fish oil, vitamin E and even green tea a week before your appointment.

Let’s say you’ve done everything right. You avoided all the medications and potential blood thinning foods and beverages a week before your treatment. This does not mean that you’ll be able to attend a big party that same evening. In fact, there’s still a high potential for bruising and swelling is pretty much guaranteed. That’s because your lips are very vascular – meaning they contain thousands of tiny blood vessels – and nicking one of them can cause a bruise to form.

If you have a special event planned make sure to give yourself plenty of time to recover.  A good rule of thumb is to book your lip injections at least two weeks in advance. If possible, four weeks would be ideal in case you require a touch up would like to make your lips a little fuller. Keep in mind that most of the swelling after your injections will subside within 48 hours but it can take up to two weeks to see the final results of your treatment.
