Contrary to popular belief, stubborn pockets of fat – double chin, love handles or bra bulges – may be an attribute of genetics more so than a lifestyle. If a double chin runs in your family you may inherit this facial feature even though you’re not overweight, exercise regularly and follow a pristine diet.
If you’re nodding with agreement because this describes you perfectly, then you might be an excellent candidate for fat dissolving injections. This non-surgical procedure strategically targets excess fat that you cannot ‘spot treat’ with diet and exercise. Also called LipoDissolve, the treatment can taper your double chin and reduce unwanted bulges on most parts of the body in just a few visits.
What are fat dissolving injections?
Fat dissolving injections are not new. In fact, doctors have been using them for years in a clinical setting to treat certain medical conditions. In 2017 cosmetic application for fat dissolving became available in Australia, offering women and men of all ages a non-invasive way to permanently remove fat cells.
The injections contain a pharmaceutical-grade compound very similar to a bile acid that’s secreted by the body’s digestive system. When you eat foods containing fats, the acids in your stomach break down these fat molecules to assist with digestion and metabolism.
In much the same way, a synthetic version of this substance is injected into adipose tissue, breaking down fat cells (a process called adipocytolysis) and causing them to be naturally eliminated by your lymphatic system. This can take anywhere from 12-16 weeks post-treatment and results are generally noticeable at around this time.
Benefits of dissolving stubborn fat
LipoDissolve offers a number of key benefits. The primary advantage is that the procedure doesn’t involve any cutting, surgery or anaesthetic. But perhaps the most compelling reason to have your fat dissolved is that the results are permanent. Once destroyed, the fat cells don’t regenerate or store fat again.
What areas can be treated with fat dissolving injections?
Some popular areas for treatment include the double chin, love handles, back/bra area, stomach, arms and thighs. If you’re struggling with your weight, however, it’s important to know that dissolving fat is not a substitute for proper weight management.
Rather, it’s a way to reduce persistent areas of fat that don’t respond to diet or exercise.
What are possible side-effects and contraindications?
Most patients describe the side-effects following fat dissolving injections as mild to moderate.
Furthermore, any side-effects are only temporary and tend to occur with less frequency and severity after each subsequent session.
You can expect any of the following:
- Swelling and redness at the injection site – This is one side-effect you definitely want to see. It means the treatment is working as intended and your fat cells are being eliminated. Swelling under the chin, in particular, tends to be most intense for the first couple of days. We advise patients to take a few days off if possible. Otherwise wearing a light scarf can cover up any swelling or redness if you choose to go back to work immediately after treatment.
- Temporary numbness – It’s perfectly normal to experience numbness in the treatment area that can last several weeks. Most people report a full recovery and return of feeling in the treatment area within 30 days.
- Firm or ‘foreign’ feeling – This is different from numbness and feels more like a mild localised discomfort. This is perfectly normal and will resolve completely within 30-45 days.
As with most cosmetic procedures, there are some contraindications with fat dissolving injections. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should wait to have this treatment.
Those with chronic health concerns such as certain types of cancer, autoimmune disease (MS or Lupus), untreated cardiovascular disease, liver or kidney disease or chronic inflammation should avoid the procedure. If you’re overweight you may not be a suitable candidate.
Advise your clinician ahead of time if you’re planning long-haul travel by air following your procedure. You may still receive a green light for treatment as long as your injector is aware of your current and past medical history.
What can I expect after treatment?
It’s normal to experience some discomfort during and after your procedure. Every individual is unique and your experience may be very different from someone else’s. For the most part, our patients tolerate fat dissolving injections very well. Additionally, we use techniques to put you at ease and minimise pain by icing the area and applying a topical numbing agent.
Several hours and days post-treatment you can expect some moderate swelling, reddening and/or itching. It’s also possible to develop some bruising, lumpiness and tenderness. These side-effects are only temporary and should fully resolve within 30-45 days. The full extent of the treatment will be discussed with you during your initial assessment.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required differs from patient to patient and depends on the area, size and level of correction required. We normally recommend 3 to 5 treatments, spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart for optimum results.
